Egyptian Blue

For the ancient Egyptians, blue wasn’t just another color

It was a symbol of the cosmos, creation, and fertility, deeply linked with the heavens and the Nile. Yet, while earth tones dominated their palette, sourced directly from the land, blue remained elusive. The sole natural source was the precious and costly mineral lapis lazuli, mined from the distant landscapes of what is now Afghanistan. Remarkably, this blue never faded; it maintained its profound, vivid hue through the ages.

The mystery of how the Egyptians crafted this vibrant blue baffled scientists for centuries since no recipes survived the sands of time. Modern experiments have revealed that Egyptian blue was synthesized by heating a mixture of sand, copper, and natron to 900 degrees Celsius with a dash of lime, forming glassy clumps that could be ground into pigment.

This shows that the paint squeezed from your modern tube is the product of lengthy, intricate experiments and wisdom.

Here’s another fascinating tidbit:

Crime scene investigators are about to receive a helping hand from ancient Egypt. Recent studies reveal that Egyptian blue, a pigment created over 5,250 years ago, can be utilized as a dusting powder for uncovering fingerprints on complex surfaces. The process involves brushing the pigment onto the surface as usual. However, the real magic happens during photography. The surface is photographed under white light using a camera modified to be sensitive to near-infrared rays and equipped with a special filter. If there are fingerprints, they’ll glow distinctly in the resulting image.

I’ve turned this into a fun assignment for you!

Pay homage to Egyptian blue

Consider this as you create:

  • Which shade of blue will you choose, and how will you apply it?

  • How will you convey its connection to ancient Egypt?

  • Will you incorporate lapis lazuli into your artwork?

  • Are you planning to include text? What font will you use? Perhaps you’ll opt for hieroglyphics?

Have fun with this project. If you post your work on Instagram, don’t forget to tag @theartbeatclub.
